From the Homewatch co-ordinator...
I was contacted this morning by a Home Watch Co-ordinator from the
Costessey area. He informed me that someone who lived nearby had received
letters from an organisatiion in Spain telling him that he had won 800,000
plus euros. The organisatioin had also asked for bank details etc.
Clearly this is a fraud and, thankfully, the person concerned told his
friend. Frauds such as this are very, very widespread and, amazingly,
large numbers of people fall for them, eventually parting with large sums
of money.. They obviously never, ever, see a prize. I have been sent the
correspondence in question and I have passed this to the appropriate
department at the Police Headquarters. I would suggest that, as
co-ordinators, you look at a very useful web site run by the Metropolitan
Police. It is www.met.police.uk/fraudalert. Click on the first site that
comes up, entitled 'Metropolitan Police Service - Fraud Alert'. This is
excellent value and give a raft of first class information!
on countering the myriad frauds that exist. I'm sure you will find it
useful when advising your members. If any of you encounter such frauds in
future please do not hesitate to let me know. Thank you
